AIS Compliant Material - Threaded Rod 316 Stainless

We are now stocking AIS Certified 316 Stainless Threaded Rod.

If your project includes the American Iron and Steel (AIS) provision, especially to qualify for Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) and Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF).  This requirement typically applies to projects for the construction, alteration, maintenance, or repair of a public water system or treatment works. The AIS provision is a permanent requirement for all CWSRF projects. The America's Water Infrastructure Act of 2018 extends the AIS provision for DWSRF projects through Fiscal Year 2023.

Project specific parts lists can be quoted using both AIS and non-AIS certified material to determine waiver eligibility.

Distribution and treatment of potable water.

Potable waterPotable water, or drinking water, simply put, is filtered to make consumption safe for humans.  Drinking water is water that is used in drink or food preparation. This water comes from natural sources including surface and ground sources and is treated to meet state federal standards for consumption.

Most government agencies require any product made in North America for the purpose of manufacture, distribution or treatment of potable water (drinking water) or related products must follow and comply to standards provided by NSF International Standard / American National Standard – NSF/ANSI 61- 2016.

So yes, to ensure the safe transportation of potable water, there are regulations on pipes and gaskets used to ensure water makes it to its final destination safe for human consumption. Using FDA and NSF approved materials is paramount as NSF/ANSI 61 requires a complete formulation disclosure from product manufacturers and their component, material and ingredient suppliers.

Standards

In regards to providing adequate health protection that exists, NSF/ANSI 61 certifies utilities, regulatory agencies and manufacturers to protection exists for products by this standard. Included in these standards:

Pipes and related products, protective and barrier materials, joining and sealing materials, process media (filter media), mechanical devices, mechanical plumbing devices and potable water materials.

One of the most important of these standards are joining and sealing materials which includes gaskets, adhesives and lubricants.  Strict guidelines that must be met before any certification can be made.  Push gaskets are used to connect various pipes used in drinking water distribution systems that require use of gasket materials to ensure a water-tight seal such as PEX, copper, CPVC or PE-RT. These fitting are designed to resist chloramines and meet tensile strength performance requirements.

Chloramines and chlorine are used to disinfect drinking water, but can effect elastomers that can compromise push-fit gaskets causing many issues including cracking, swelling (severe in some cases), elasticity loss and tensile strength loss. To this point, NSF has certified more than 900 gasket materials.
