Becoming certified as a Women Business Enterprise  (WBE) — which is a certification that is growing in popularity and used by many corporations and the US federal government —  isn't just for anyone nor is it for every business. However being a woman in business does not have to be a disadvantage, especially if you capitalize on the advantages.

Some of the qualifications include the business must be 51% or more owned by a woman or women, controlled, and day-by-day managed by a woman or women. There's a lot of paperwork involved as the processing portion alone takes 30-60 days on average.

Advantages For Woman Owned Business Certification

Advantages of being WBE certified are plenty. Women's business certification is an important marketing tool for women who want to do business with corporate America or the federal government. The Women's Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) certification is the national standard for certification with 12,500 certified women business owners. The WBENC is the organization that certifies businesses as WBE  Most WBE businesses grow significantly as a result of certification.

But that certification requires lots of work. The paperwork and other requirements can take up several days of intense work to complete and submit.  The U.S. government offers free help in planning how to start or improve woman owned businesses and in securing low-interest SBA-backed small business loans. The U.S. Small Business Administration recognizes the unique obstacles women face in the business world and has an "Office of Women's Business Ownership" dedicated to assist women at every stage of developing and expanding their businesses.  

Many organizations offer certifications for women owned businesses. These certifications claim to be important marketing tools with major corporations and government agencies. The Women's Business Entrepreneurial National Council (WBENC) offers the Women's Business Enterprise (WBE) certification for women owned businesses.
